Musical Director
Steve Bayless
Steve Bayless is a lifelong musician, director, and passionate advocate for
vocal health and ensemble singing. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music
with an emphasis in Vocal Performance from Sam Houston State University
and has spent more than two decades performing and leading music in the
greater Houston area.
Steve’s professional singing experience spans a wide range of styles and
ensembles, including performances with the Houston Grand Opera Chorus,
Houston Symphony Chorus, Houston Masterworks, and the Texas Master
Chorale. He has also served in music ministry at several Houston-area
churches and is currently serving at John Wesley Methodist Church in north
Houston. In addition to performing, Steve has taught private voice, led
youth choirs, and directed handbell choirs, working with singers of all ages
and experience levels.
Although classically trained, Steve’s musical roots run deep in barbershop
harmony. He grew up immersed in the barbershop world as the child of
longtime Sweet Adelines leader and director Vickie Dennis, former director
of both the Houston Tidelanders and Houston Horizon Chorus. That early
exposure instilled in him a love for close harmony, vocal excellence, and the
powerful sense of community found in the chorus setting.
After years focused on classical music, Steve joyfully returned to
barbershop as an adult, /nding renewed energy and connection through
ensemble singing. He has been actively involved in the vocal development of
barbershop choruses and brings a collaborative, singer-centered approach
to leadership. His work emphasizes healthy vocal production, musical
growth, and creating an environment where singers feel con/dent,
supported, and inspired.
As director of Katy Vocal Express, Steve is committed to helping singers
grow musically while rediscovering the joy of singing together. His goal is
simple and enduring: to equip every singer with the tools to use their voice
healthfully, musically, and joyfully—for a lifetime.
